#Dysgraphia, #dyslexia
Dear parents of younger students, if your schoolchild has great difficulty reading or writing, makes many mistakes in written speech, and cannot repeat the syllables or sounds of a word when speaking, it is likely that the child has dysgraphia and dyslexia, which needs the work of a speech therapist. :
Anna Abrahamyan, a speech therapist at the Kana Psychological Center, answers questions about dysgraphia and dyslexia.
Is dyslexia a disease or a characteristic? Is it true that these children are more talented than others?
Dyslexia is a partially unique disorder of the reading process, which is caused by the incomplete formation (disorder) of higher mental functions and is expressed by repeated errors of a stable nature.
Dyslexia is caused by the incomplete formation of the mental functions that normally carry out the reading process (visual analysis and combination, spatial concepts, phonetic perception, phonetic analysis and combination, underdevelopment of speech vocabulary).
In my opinion, it is not that these children are more talented than others, but this problem is not an obstacle to becoming talented and famous.
There are many famous dyslexic people such as Agatha Christie, Winston Churchill, Woodrow Wilson, Walt Disney, Tom Cruise, Albert Einstein, Hans Christian Andersen, Alexander Bell and others.
When does dyslexia usually start to show?
Since dyslexia is a disorder of the reading process, it appears at school age, when the processes of writing and reading are formed.
With dyslexia, a child has difficulty learning and remembering letters and words.
Then has trouble reading, reads letter by letter, substitutes sounds, misses word endings, etc.
What is or are the characteristics of working with children with dyslexia?
When working with children with dyslexia, the degree, nature and type of expression of disorders are taken into account, which makes it possible to determine the correct direction of speech therapy - corrective work.
As well as during work, an individual approach is shown to any child. A favorable and safe environment is created for the child.
What kind of exercises and tasks are done with such children?
Depending on the type of disorder. At work, visual and phonetic analysis, combination, perception, spatial perception, exercises and tasks that develop the grammatical aspect of speech are mainly used.
Does overcoming this problem also depend on the environment and its attitude?
The environment factor is very important.
Let's start with school. the teacher has an important role, who must be aware of the problem, because in many cases dyslexia is perceived as "laziness" and can affect the child's self-esteem and cause an inferiority complex.
And the correct and competent approach of the teacher can stimulate speech therapy work and contribute to the most tangible effectiveness.
Also, the role of the parent is very important, who should constantly encourage the child, not compare him with other children, realizing his child's problem.
Teacher-professional-parent cooperation is encouraged in order to avoid the above-mentioned problems.

Dysgraphia is a partial unique disorder of the writing process and is expressed by repeated errors of a persistent nature.
The process of writing is closely related to the process of speaking and is carried out only on the basis of a fairly high level of its development.
During dysgraphia, a child can make many mistakes when writing: write words together, miss letters, have bad handwriting, etc.
It is very important that the teacher and parent distinguish this problem from poor performance by contacting a specialist in time.
Is it completely surmountable or not?
Yes, depending on the degree and type of the problem, dyslexia can be fully overcome.
Are there many children with this problem in Armenia or is it a rare phenomenon in Armenia?
There are no clear statistics, however, unfortunately, reading disorders are quite common in Armenia.
